Greater Green Bay is home to the first and only site in the United States approved by the Roman Catholic Church as an apparition site of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many pilgrimages have been made to the Shrine in Champion (located just a few miles outside of Green Bay) since the appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1859.
